Student Matinee Series
Theatre is an extraordinary experience, an art form unlike any other. The Student Matinees Series at Kansas City Repertory Theatre is an affordable way for area students to experience professional theatre performances. In addition to seeing a professional theatre production, students learn more about the performance and production via post-show discussions with the actors and technical crew that immediately follow all matinees. All student matinees begin at 10:00 a.m., with the exception of A Christmas Carol matinees, which begin at 10:30 a.m.

With a dizzying array of lightning-fast transformations and costume changes, two of Kansas City’s finest actors, Mark Robbins and Ron McGee, portray multiple men, women and monsters in The Mystery of Irma Vep. Cited as one of the best plays of 1984 by The New York Times and TIME magazine, Charles Ludlam's farcical thriller/comedy is a gender-bending tour-de-force that both celebrates and satirizes horror movies, classic literature and the conventions of theatre itself. Set on a “dark and stormy night,” Lady Enid arrives at an estate with her new husband, who is under the spell of his deceased first wife and haunted by something prowling the grounds. Freely quoting from a range of literary, cinematic and pop culture sources, The Mystery of Irma Vep is a fun madcap romp with a nod to Shakespeare, Ibsen, Hitchcock and Poe; werewolves, vampires and mummies!
Themes and Content: Parody of classic plays, novels and films; two actors play many roles; comic language; celebration of live theatre and acting styles Genre: farcical comedy

The Rep partners with two award-winning theatre companies to premiere an original play about six people who live in Kansas City, doing their best to talk, to listen and to survive in a country where the distance between two people is less than a shout but more than a handshake. Based on conversations with Kansas City residents, and rooted in the ideas, thoughts, and observations of our local communities, the fictional narrative of Waiting for You on the Corner of (13th and Walnut) examines how we listen to one another, finds the shared values of our unique communities, and asks if consensus can be found in the midst of polarizing politics and individual perspectives. Waiting for You on the Corner of (13th and Walnut) is a one-of-a-kind theatrical event commissioned by Kansas City Repertory Theatre, continuing our commitment to excellent new theatre and investment in the stories of our community.
New Works Revisited – Clay

Developed in collaboration with and directed by Eric Rosen
Student Matinees: Feb 21, 26, 27, 28 – 10:00 am 2013
Location: Copaken Stage, 13th and Walnut, downtown KC
The final event of this year’s First Page Festival will be a remounted encore performance of the hip-hop musical Clay, a new work that debuted with much acclaim at KC Rep in 2008. Clay highlights the best of what new work means for Kansas City, and we are delighted to offer this limited return engagement of the show. Created by a phenomenal young artist named Matt Sax in collaboration with Rosen, Clay is a coming-of-age story told with the great humor, intensity, and lyricism of contemporary hip hop music. The story follows Clifford, a boy from the suburbs, who escapes the dissolution of his family and comes under the tutelage of Sir John, a Falstaff-like master of the spoken word. As Clifford ascends to stardom as the rap-star Clay, his world is turned upside down as his past comes back to haunt him. Matt’s solo tour-de-force performance won him Chicago’s prestigious Joseph Jefferson Award and critical acclaim for its Los Angeles run. This is theatre teenagers don't expect and once Matt takes the mic and begins, it is the theatre they've most been wanting to see.
Contains strong language and content and loud music. Themes and Content: reconciling one’s childhood with maturity, hip-hop musical genre, Self-discovery, storytelling, the multi-cultural roots of rhythmic speech and hip-hop music, independence, identity, finding one’s own voice, the power of language, rites of passage

Winner of the Obie Award and New York Drama Critic’s Best Play Award, American Buffalo tells the story of Don, Teach and Bob’s struggle to get ahead. Centering on a scheme to recover a buffalo nickel recently sold from Don’s Resale Shop, the three discover realities about business, leadership and ethics, all told from the petty theft view of the pursuit of the American Dream. An almost unintentional companion piece to Death of a Salesman, American Buffalo takes a modern look at the underbelly of American capitalism in which every exchange including friendship has “business” written on it. Due to strong language, The Rep encourages the fearless and adventurous to join us for this show.
